Protect Your Operation from Scam Equipment Purchases

PrivacyOnline marketplaces make it easier for farmers to find used equipment quickly, but scammers are increasingly targeting agricultural buyers with convincing fraud schemes.

Recent warnings from the Better Business Bureau (BBB) describe a growing “virtual vendor vehicle” scam where fraudsters impersonate legitimate dealerships, create fake websites and listings, and collect payment for equipment that does not exist. In one case, buyers across several states lost more than $223,000 after wiring funds for machinery that was never delivered. The FBI’s most recent Internet Crime Complaint Report details over $503 million in losses for non-delivery scams in 2025.

These scams often look legitimate. Fraudsters copy real business names, use stolen equipment photos, and advertise on trusted platforms like Facebook Marketplace. Prices are typically set well below market value to pressure buyers into acting fast. Once payment is sent, communication stops.

Watch For Warning Signs

  • Equipment priced significantly below market value
  • Requests for urgent payment via wire transfer, cryptocurrency, or gift cards
  • Incomplete or poorly built websites with limited contact information
  • Contact details that don’t match official records
  • Sellers unwilling or unable to show equipment in person or via live video
  • Listings using stock or reused images (reverse image searches can help)

Protect Yourself

  • Verify the seller through trusted sources like the BBB and state business registrations
  • Contact dealers using verified phone numbers, not those listed in ads
  • Compare pricing across multiple sources
  • Never send payment before inspecting equipment in person or through a live video walkthrough
  • Use safer payment methods when possible and document all communications

If something feels off, pause. A legitimate seller will allow time for verification. Taking a few extra steps can help protect your operation, finances, and peace of mind.
